Luke Garton joined the Department of History in January 2014. Prior to that, he served for three years as a professional advisor for UT’s Arts & Sciences Advising Services office. He works closely with history majors pursuing pre-health, pre-law, and pre-teaching as well as those on academic probation. Luke performs a wide variety of tasks outside of individual advising appointments: he conducts freshmen and transfer orientation sessions for new history majors, helps history faculty members navigate the curriculum, assists students with the petitioning process, and aids in the coordination of events held by the department. He meets with all new freshmen and transfer history majors as they arrive at UT. After advising them for their first few semesters, he personally recommends them to a faculty advisor who shares their unique research/academic interests. Students are advised by their assigned faculty advisor after that, but Luke is still a good resource for additional questions and concerns that may arise beyond the scope of faculty advising.
Luke earned his Bachelor of Arts degree from Frostburg State University with a double major in Social Science and Sociology and a minor in Spanish. He also holds a Master of Education degree in Higher Education Administration from Vanderbilt University.
