Dr. Shannen Dee Williams to lecture on “The Real Sister Act”

Williams PosterOn February 16, 2015, Dr. Shannen Dee Williams will present her lecture entitled, “The Real Sister Act” This lecture, part of the Africana Studies Spring Symposium, will take place At 1210 McClung Tower at 12:30PM.

In this talk, Dr. Williams will examine the politics of memory and the limitations of the American racial imagination as it pertains to black Catholic nuns and their long and rich history in the Atlantic world. Although black female religious life dates back to the first-century Church, representations of black Catholic sisters in U.S. culture are rare phenomena. As a consequence, depictions of black nuns in art, literature, and film are routinely met with an uneasy mixture of awe, laughter, and skepticism buttressed by questions of historical authenticity.
