History Department's Stephen Ash Publishes Fourth Book
Stephen V. Ash, Distinguished Professor in the Humanities, and Professor of History at UTK, has just published Firebrand of Liberty: The Story of Two Black Regiments that Changed the Course of the Civil War (W.W. Norton, 2008). This book tells the compelling story of the first African-American troops to see combat in the Union Army, in a largely forgotten but, as Ash argues, seminal campaign in Florida in March of 1863. The impressive discipline of these troops and their effectiveness in the stress of war, in fact, played an enormous role in persuading President Lincoln to begin using African-American troops on a broad scale soon after.
