Declaring a Major
In order to be an officially declared major in History, there are a few steps you must take in addition to stating an interest during the application and orientation processes at the University of Tennessee.
First, you may not declare a history major until you have completed the prerequisite courses. (Go to Requirements for the History Major.)
Second, you may not declare a history major if you are on Academic Review. Once the Review has been cleared, consideration will be given.
If you have met the above requirements, you may declare a history major. You MUST bring to the History Department either a copy of your academic history or your DARS report. (an official transcript is not needed) Your academic history can be obtained in the Arts and Sciences Advising Center (1 Alumni Memorial Building). Simply tell someone at the advising center that you wish to declare a history major, and he or she will give you a copy of your academic history. If you do not receive a copy of your academic history, please ask for it. You will not be accepted as a major without it, and History will not print out a copy for you.
After obtaining a copy of your academic history, go to the History Department Office, located on the Sixth Floor of Dunford Hall, Room 2638. There you will be declared as a major, assigned an advisor in the department and given his or her contact information. When you are declared, you may set up an appointment with your History advisor at any time if you wish to discuss your program of study in History, or if you need to be cleared for semester registration. Please contact your advisor via email to begin the scheduling process; you should not go to the Arts and Sciences Advising Center to be advised.
If you have any questions, please feel free to call the Department of History at (865) 974-5421. Office hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
