Stating a history interest during the application and orientation processes at UT is a good first step, but to officially declare a history major, you must first complete the prerequisite courses. See Requirements for the History Major.
You may declare your major once you’ve received your grades for the above prerequisites. There is no application; to declare, simply bring either a copy of your academic history report or your DARS report—both obtainable on MyUTK—to the Department of History main office. An official transcript is not necessary. The history department will not print out these reports for you, so please come prepared with your paperwork.
Upon declaring your major, you will be assigned an advisor in the department. You may set up appointments with your history advisor via email during fall and spring semesters, whether you wish to discuss your program of study in history or if you need to be cleared for semester registration. Please note that you should no longer go to the College of Arts and Sciences Advising Center to be advised.
