Harrison received the 2020 Stephens and Hoffman Award, which goes to a history major at any stage of study who has demonstrated academic excellence. Harrison is described by his recommenders as “an inquisitive, enthusiastic student” and who is “always keen to make connections between what we were discussing at a particular moment and earlier topics and sources.”

Colton Ragsdale

Colton Ragsdale, Senior

Colton received the 2020 JP and Gladys Maples Award, established to recognize a worthy history major working in any field. Faculty letter-writers noted Colton’s active participation in discussion, and labeled his classwork “strikingly well-written, very ably sourced, and compelling in argument,” “with a kind of rigor that distinguished him from his peers.”

Grace Sloan

Grace Sloan, Junior

Grace received the 2020 Wheeler ‘Best in 307’ Award. Professor Emeritus Bruce Wheeler is an American historian and a legend as an undergraduate teacher. To demonstrate his ongoing commitment to history undergraduates, Professor Wheeler established an award to be given each year to a junior who is or will participate in the department’s honors program. Grace’s recommender called her letter “the easiest to write in my…career,” going on to observe that “her mind…grasps the larger human questions that the discipline raises,” and called her “the kind of student who sets the intellectual tone for a whole course.”
