Susan Ferber, executive editor for American and World history at Oxford University Press, will be on campus to discuss what she calls “the dirty little secret of the second book.” Although it’s easier to get a second book published, as you’ve already established a track record of sorts, there are unique challenges. Chief among these are balancing writing with teaching, as first books are usually based on dissertations and second books require an abundance of new research, and making sure Book No. 2 is distinct from Book No. 1. Ferber’s talk will also include more general publishing information such as how to approach a publisher and how university presses operate. While anchored in history, her talk will also be of general interest to writers across the humanities.
