Professor Smith is a presidential historian teaching American Race Relations and Politics at Canterbury Christ Church University and Richmond, The American International Uni-versity in London. She gained her Ph.D. in History from the University of Mississippi and her thesis was entitled “Populism and Democ-ratization in the Presidential Election of 1832.” She is currently pursuing a second doctorate analyzing modern presidential power at Oxford University. She has had six peer-re-viewed journal articles published and enjoys writing op-eds for outlets, including The Washington Post. Her presentation is based on an article she published in the journal American Nineteenth Century History
