UT Integrates

Theotis Robinson Jr.
Theotis Robinson Jr., Charles Blair, and Willie Mae Gillespie were UT’s first admitted black undergraduates in January 1961.

Department of History faculty member Dr. Bob Hutton has a piece in the September issue of Torchbearer Magazine on the history of integration at the University of Tennessee. “UT Integrates” is part of a series of stories on the history of the University, commemorating its 225 years.

Dr. Hutton notes that UT was desegregated in the same way the rest of the South was– by “a grass-roots movement led by black Southerners, many of them Knoxville natives.”
