Graduate Student
Lauren James is a third-year PhD student studying Modern German History under Dr. Monica Black. Her Master’s thesis focused on the emergence the conceptual “Kinderstube”, or nursery, in late 19th and early 20th century Germany as a means to explore how competing groups of Germans debated, resisted, and furthered social, cultural, and political change through the idea of childhood leading up to the fin de siècle. Moving forward, she intends to focus her research on changing perception on corporal punishment for children from the Empire to the Federal Republic.
